The Great Kentish Bird Off – Oare Marshes Reserve
The annual Great Coastal Birdwatch is running from 14 October until 29 October 2023.
Join us as we welcome our amazing migratory birds back to our coast for the winter season and help us to find out what species can be found on our North Kent coastline between Gravesend and Whitstable.
On this day we will be having a bit of friendly competition with our friends at Bird Wise East Kent as we record the birds we spot at Kent Wildlife Trust Oare Marshes reserve, and they record the birds they see at Pegwell Bay between 10am and 4pm. At the end of the day we’ll see who has seen the most species and will crown them the winners. North Kent are the current winners so we hope to retain our trophy!
As part of the bird off we are holding a guided walk around the reserve. Meeting in the main car park at 1.30pm, we will walk out around the reserve and set up the scope to watch the birds feeding on the falling tide.
Suitable for all the family including beginners, our Rangers will help with identification as we record the birds we see. Well behaved dogs are also welcome, but they must be kept on a lead to avoid disturbing the birds. If you have binoculars, please remember to bring them but don’t worry if not as you can have a look through our scope.
There is paid parking on site, but the nearest toilets and cafe facilities are in Oare village.
It is free to attend our events, but spaces are limited so please book your space. This also ensures we have your contact details in case we need to change anything. You will receive a confirmation email when you book and joining instructions will be sent the day before the walk.
